Department of Biomechanics, Movement Science and Sports Informatics at the Institute of Sports Science at the University of Vienna

The focus at the Institute of Sport Science at the University of Vienna is on the analysis of all sporting movements and the interaction between sports equipment and athletes, also involving young researchers in the context of bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral theses.

The Vicon system is used for a wide range of issues:

  • Kinematic analysis of the relative movement between Subject and Isokinet dynamometer in the context of muscle mechanics studies
  • Movement and stress analysis in obese children
  • Kinematic comparison of the foot, knee and hip joint angle during running on the track and on the treadmill
  • Effects of subject positioning in an isokinetic dynamometer on different kinematic and kinetic parameters during plantar flexion
  • Effects of backward walking on different kinematic and kinetic parameters of the lower extremities

They work on complex issues by combining movement analysis with additional measurement systems, such as force sensors, accelerometers or EMG. They are involved in a wide range of projects. For example, the novel sports shoe development up to sports bra tests or movement analysis in archery.

Recommended products

Vantage is Vicon’s flagship range of cameras. The sensors have resolutions of 5, 8 and 16 megapixels, with sample rates up to 2000Hz – this allows you to capture fast movements with very high accuracy. The cameras also have built-in temperature and bump sensors, as well as a clear display, to warn you if cameras have moved physically or due to thermal expansion. High-powered LEDs and sunlight filters mean that the Vantage is also the best choice for outdoor use and large volumes.

The Optima is the flagship among force plates. The patented calibration technology guarantees the highest possible accuracy across the entire surface of the plate – ideal for gait analysis, biomechanical research and other applications where the highest quality data is essential.

The reference video camera has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (full HD) up to 60Hz in full colour. Fully synchronized and compatible with T-Series, Bonita, Vantage and Vero cameras in the same system, the Vue lets you capture marker data and reference video simultaneously. Using the Active Calibration Wand, you can also calibrate the Vue camera, which allows you to overlay all 3D data on top of the video.

Sports bra optimisation through finite element simulation of the interaction with female breast tissue (FEM sports bra)

In this project, the VICON system was used to answer the following questions:

  • What changes to sports bras allow for a Reduce the upward movement of the breasts without compromising comfort?
  • How can a scientifically based and evaluated model contribute to the objectification of the individual fitting of a sports bra
